Gus Moderns "UpCycle" ottoman took a position in Tuesday's preview of the CUT/PASTE exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum Institute for Contemporary Culture on the 4th floor of the new addition. The exhibit shows different objects that reuse materials in innovative ways.
The UpCycle Ottoman is proof positive that creative use can result in smarter, more sustainable manufacturing. The ottomans bold, simple form was created with serial production in mind, but the ingenious use of reclaimed burlap (coffee bags) means that environmental footprint is a fraction of that of typical upholstered piece and each is completely unique.

Regarding the Gus Bathurst collection, previously mentioned, I have just received a clarification from Gus themselves. Turns out that the Bathurst collection (pronounced BATH-urst) is named after a street in downtown Toronto.

Introducing the Bathurst storage collection from Gus. We have debated on the pronunciation; Bath-hurst? Bat-hurst? Either way they are pretty cool. There are three different models for whatever space you are looking for. Great as a sideboard, TV stand, extra storage for your kitchen, or even a dresser. The cabinets are walnut with stainless legs and are stocked in Canada and take a fast couple weeks to ship. Stop in to see all the options.

There are many great materials in the world, sometimes perhaps too many. Narrowing it down and working with local designers who really know their product and what's out there in the market place can make all the difference. I wrote this blog about Surface before ever looking at their Website and I wasn't at all surprised to find embedded in the words of their "about us" page, the same philosophies expounding on exactly what my impression was of their business. Next time you feel the need to tile, carpet or just explore materials, be sure to check them out. Ask for Kara. Surface located at 1235 SE Grand Ave Portland, OR 97214 (503) 235-1235

I have been in love with Rochelle since the first time I saw her. Gus, a Toronto-based furniture company, has a concept based on “simple forms and honest materials,” both of which describe Rochelle.
The design is clean with touches of perfection, including a single row of button tufting, long seat cushion and the wood legs that flow up three quarters of Rochelle’s back, my favorite part of the sofa; float Rochelle in the center of a space to show off her graceful beauty. Although her look seems formal with a low back and sleek frame, a couple of throw pillows will make her cozy enough to cuddle up with your favorite book.
Currently she is available in three fabrics: Urban Tweed Gosford, Urban Tweed Oatmeal and the newly introduced Urban Tweed Truffle. Rochelle is a prime example of how classic styles will always be in fashion.
